The Central American country of Honduras is a mountainous land with rain forests and fertile coastal plains on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts. Honduras has a population of 7.6 million people, with the capital city of Tegucigalpa having just over a million residents. It is a country young in age with 37% under the age of fifteen.
Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, with most wealth in the hands of a very small minority. There is widespread unemployment, low wages, with limited development to make life difficult for the majority, which live under the poverty line. The unemployment rate is 28%, and the government faces an uphill battle in establishing true stability and order because of internal corruption and a poor economy. Pray for righteousness and for wise and resolute governance.
McDermott Road took its first mission trip to the Agalta Valley region in Olancho, Honduras in 2003. At that time, there were three active congregations in the region. CCMR members worked in the area every year, often making more than one visit, including summer trips with our youth group. We have sponsored dental, vision, and medical clinics and poured hundreds of cement floors in poor houses, as well as built homes, church buildings, and latrines. McDermott members have also supported over 100 students through high school and university. We have also shipped three containers of clothing, shoes, New Testaments, songbooks, and various teaching aides.
During these years, McDermott has have had a primary role in starting five congregations, along with construction of those church buildings. These churches are filled with people who love God, have a strong faith and worship is vibrant. Their thankfulness for the Lord’s blessings is a lesson to those of us who have so much.
The rate of babies born to unwed mothers is extremely high, contributing to almost half the population being children, the majority of which live in poverty. Thousands unsuccessfully attempt to cross to the USA to find family members. Garbage dump children are more prevalent in Honduras than any county in the Americas adding to the thousands of street children. Pray that the healthy development of the Spirit of Christ in the Lord’s church will impart biblical knowledge and will be a model for spiritual development and ministry.
